Keep in mind that Sysprep for XP works a bit differently then the Sysprep for Vista or 7. For example, answer file for Sysprep in XP is named Sysprep.inf, and default name for answer file in Vista or 7 is Autounattend.xml. Only users with administrator privileges can execute Sysprep and only one Sysprep instance can run at a time. The Sysprep utility must be used after the reference computer is completed and ready to be captured. The sysprep.exe file is simply missing on my Windows 7 64bit machine. I tried to find it on another computer, but it wasn't found there either. I can't understand it, because on a lot of forums. 11 Steps totalStep 1: Create a unattend.xml file using WAIK
Create the unattended XML file using Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK). Be sure to use a volume license Windows 7 MAK key that has been obtained through the Microsoft Volume Licensing portal. Follow the instructions at the following location for a good tutorial on the XML file creation:

Step 2: Install Windows 7 Volume License
Install Windows 7 Professional using the volume license installation media on to the target workstation.
Step 3: Enter audit modeWindows 7 Sysprep Locations
Once installation has finished, Windows will prompt you to create a username press CTRL + SHIFT + F3. This will place the workstation in to audit mode.
Step 4: Install the necessary workstation drivers and software
Once in audit mode, close SYSPREP GUI window and proceed to install any necessary drivers and applicable software on to the workstation. Do not activate Windows at this time.
Step 5: Create the 'Scripts' directory
Create a folder titled Scripts in the following directory: %WINDIR%Setup on the target workstation.

Create a CMD file within the %WINDIR%SetupScripts directory. Right click and make a new text file called SetupComplete.txt. Remove the .txt extension and replace with .cmd.

Step 7: Edit the CMD file
Edit the CMD file with notepad and insert the following lines to delete the unattend.xml file once the installation has completed:
del /Q /F c:windowssystem32sysprepunattend.xml
del /Q /F c:windowspantherunattend.xml
This will remove unattend.xml files once the workstation has been configured in case there have been any administrative passwords defined in the XML file.
Step 8: Copy your unattend.xml file to the workstation
Copy or move your unattend.xml file to : C:windowssystem32sysprep
Step 9: Open the command prompt from the sysprep folder
Navigate to C:windowssystem32sysprep, hold SHIFT and right click the folder background and select “Open New Command Windows Here”.
Step 10: Run the SYSPREP command
In the command window enter the following commands:
sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:unattend.xml
Step 11: Allow the SYSPREP process to finish
The workstation will run through SYSPREP and make the necessary changes to the default user profile. When finished, the workstation will proceed to shut down. Once the workstation has shut down, use your image tool of choice to capture the SYSPREPPED workstation image.
